TermNet, which has been established as a non-profit association but with commercial objectives for the benefit of its members, heartfully welcomes the establishment of the Association for Terminology and Lexicography (ATL).
Seen from the point of view of developing a terminology market consisting of suppliers of terminological products and services and their users, TermNet invites the members of ATL to join efforts with a view to developing and providing the market with terminological data, tools and services, as required.
ATL will certainly be interested in the fact that not only at European level, but also in East Asia and some countries in Latin America terminological products and services have been recognized as instrumental in fostering development and innovation in private industry, public administration, science and research, education and training etc. The activities of the Workshop CEN/ISSS/eCAT "Multilingual eCataloguing" in the framework of the Information Society Standardization System of the European Standards Committee is a striking evidence for the recognition of terminological methods in eBusiness, eGovernment, eHealth, eLearning etc. In an internal document, the EU Commission placed "content" (in terms of product description and classification, which cannot do without terminology) in the centre of its standardization strategy.
In industry, a new type of terminologist is emerging: the manager of - more often than not multilingual - content resources needed to operate knowledge management systems. In this connection, terminologists may also offer qualifications in terms of "soft skills" urgently needed in international project management, cross-cultural communication, etc. TermNet is looking forward to a most interesting development of traditional and new professional profiles of terminologists and is ready to support ATL by word and deed.

    Best regards and wishes,
    Christian Galinski
